East Coast Hockey League, 1988-2003
ECHL, 2003-present

In 1988, teams from the defunct Atlantic Coast Hockey League and All-American Hockey League formed a new, five-team league, the East Coast Hockey League, which began to serve as a second-tier developmental league to the NHL, behind the American Hockey League. With the absorption of the West Coast Hockey League in 2003, the ECHL had affiliates for nearly every NHL team, including for both the Canadiens and Maple Leafs, in a number of different cities. While the ECHL now only has a Toronto affiliate, while Montréal has not had one since Brampton in 2018, the Canadiens will likely rejoin the ECHL soon, and thus restart the on-and-off rivalry between their affiliate clubs that has been ongoing since 1992.
