Canadian Women’s Hockey League, 2010-19

Established in 2007, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League became the first centralized women’s league in Canada to truly gain a national holding, following decades of disorganized league play across the country. However, Toronto only had teams in their suburbs, with a Toronto-based team only joining the league in 2010. The Toronto Aeros, facing the Montréal Stars, saw the rivalry evolve into Les Canadiennes vs. the Furies, with each team keeping ties to their NHL counterparts, the Canadiens and Maple Leafs. The Canadiennes largely dominated the decade, attracting the top stars of the women’s game to both cities, before the league abruptly shut down in 2019, but any future women’s hockey professional league will surely pick up the rivalry where the Furies and les Canadiennes left it.
