Toronto FC and the Montréal Impact first met on Canadian soccer’s biggest stage in 2008, a full four years before the Impact had formally joined MLS, while part of the North American Soccer League, one tier below MLS. Facing off for the Canadian Championship, the Impact stunned TFC on their home pitch, instantly igniting what would be known as “the 401 Derby.” The rivalry only grew fiercer when the Impact officially joined MLS in 2012, with rival fans swarming each other’s stadia multiple times a year, an almost guaranteed finals meeting in the annual Canadian Championship, and a legendary tilt in the 2016 Conference Finals that became an instant classic in the newly-written lore of this rivalry.
