National Hockey Association, 1910-17

Before the National Hockey League, there was the National Hockey Association, the predecessor league that started in 1909 when founded by Ambrose O’Brien. The Canadiens, who were a charter member of the NHA, did not get to face a team from Toronto until 1912, when the “Blueshirts” were formed and played out of Arena Gardens. While the league would ultimately fold when all owners except Toronto’s, Eddie Livingstone, formed a new league (what would become the NHL) in order to force out the Blueshirts, early indications of this rivalry were evident before Montréal and Toronto faced off for their first NHL tilt, particularly when these squads faced off for the O’Brien Cup in 1914, with the winner to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. The fact that many players for both teams (such as Georges Vézina, Newsy Lalonde and Corb Denneny) made the jump from the NHA to the NHL only helped the rivalry heat up in its permanent home in the NHL in December 1917, after just five seasons in the NHA.
