Montréal

Montréal Canadiens
Le Club de hockey Canadien
founded December 4, 1909

Established in the National Hockey Association by J. Ambrose O’Brien, the Canadiens are the only active franchise that predates the NHL, as the team was one of three franchises that helped form the NHL in 1917. By far the most successful franchise in NHL history, the Canadiens have captured 24 Stanley Cups, and their 1993 title is the most recent won by a Canadian franchise.

Originally one of two Montréal franchises (along with the Maroons, supported by Montréal’s Anglophone community), the Maroons folded in 1938, providing both French and English Québecers a singular team to back, particularly in the Original Six era, where the Canadiens were only one of two Canadian teams in the league – the other, of course, being Toronto.
