1992 to 2017

THE GLOBAL ERA
With the league at 24 teams by the NHL’s 75th anniversary, the league tripled in size in just 25 years, increasing to 30 by the year 2000. The anniversary season (and centennial of the Stanley Cup) was nearly the first Leafs-Canadiens Final since 1967, but a controversial Wayne Gretzky goal instead sent the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Cup Finals. However, the mere thought of such a nostalgic matchup, fueled by the fan desire for more than two inter-conference games per season, led to the charge to have the Leafs return to the Eastern Conference for the 1998-99 season. Now division rivals meeting 4-5 times per year, the rivalry has begun to pick up some lost post-expansion momentum, with modern stars from around the globe like Mats Sundin, Saku Koivu, Curtis Joseph and Carey Price helping to put more meaning and intensity into each game in the lead-up to the centennial anniversary of the rivalry.
