Toronto Blue Jays

🏆: 2 (1992-93)
Major League Baseball, 1978-2004

While Montréal and Toronto had a baseball rivalry that dated back to the Triple-A International League in 1928, the Royals (a Dodgers affiliate) left Montréal in 1960, and the Maple Leafs (a Red Sox affiliate) left Toronto in 1967, leaving a void in Canadian baseball until the Montréal Expos joined Major League Baseball in 1969, with the Toronto Blue Jays following in 1977. With two Canadian franchises, there was instant interest in seeing these squads compete, but unable to face each other with Toronto in the American League and Montréal in the National League, the Pearson Cup was established in 1978 as an annual exhibition series where each team would meet once yearly prior to the season. And when interleague play began in the 1997 season, the Blue Jays and Expos met for the first time in regular season play (on Canada Day weekend, no less). They would meet annually until 2004, after the Expos were relocated to Washington, D.C. as the Nationals, leaving the Blue Jays as Canada’s sole team.
