Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club
founded November 26, 1917

Granted with a franchise when the NHL was founded in 1917, pro hockey in Toronto began under the Toronto Arena Company, fielding a team called the “Arenas” playing at Arena Gardens. After two seasons, the team became the Toronto St. Pats for eight seasons, until new owner Conn Smythe renamed the team the “Maple Leafs” in 1927.

The Leafs have captured 13 Stanley Cups, the second highest total in NHL history (behind only Montréal) – however, they have not won the Cup since 1967. Despite their recent woes, the Leafs have a major following across Canada, considered by many as “Canada’s team,” amplified by their exposure from Hockey Night In Canada on radio and television across the country.
