Stanley Cup Playoffs

THE PLAYOFFS
Despite the long, storied history between these two franchises, they have surprisingly only met sixteen times in the postseason, only five times for the Stanley Cup (in 1947, 1951, 1959, 1960 and 1967), and just once since 1979. However, starting with the NHL championship in 1918, the postseason marked a new level of intensity between these two clubs, marking some of the most historic playoff moments ever in hockey. “Rocket” Richard’s five goal game, Bill Barilko’s heroics in a series that had all five games go to overtime, and the legendary 1967 Final during the league’s 50th anniversary and Canada’s centennial all cemented the rivalry’s the lore, and while there have been a few “almosts” in recent years to link these two back up in the playoffs, and finally a meeting in 2021, future opportunities will open a new chapter of the rivalry for the new century.
