1967 to 1992

THE EXPANSION ERA
With the NHL immediately doubling in size to start the 1967-68 season, fears over the frequency and intensity of the rivalry dwindling arose, as suddenly the number of rivalry games per season began to drop, and players scattered to expansion teams across Canada and the U.S. However, even in the midst of further expansion throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, and the removal of the Maple Leafs from the Canadiens’ division in 1981, the rivalry was fuelled by the Canadiens dynasty of the 1970’s, backed by stars like Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and Larry Robinson, as well as emerging Leaf stars like Darryl Sittler, Borje Salming and Wendel Clark, who made sure, even when reduced to three meetings a year, that each showdown was special. This era also featured the last playoff meetings between these two teams, with their only post-Original Six meetings in 1978 and 1979.
