THE MODERN ERA
The NHL began its Centennial era by expanding to a 31st team in Las Vegas (and later a 32nd team in Seattle), while the Canadiens entered the NHL’s 101st season on a 14-game win streak over the Leafs, the longest in rivalry history for either side. The era, however, brings hope for a renewal of intensity that the rivalry has not seen since the Original Six era, with the next generation of NHL stars like Auston Matthews, Nick Suzuki, Mitchell Marner and Cole Caufield bringing a fresh energy to the matchup. With both squads emerging as contenders in the Eastern Conference, the coming years of the Two Solitudes rivalry stand to be some of the most exciting games in its history.
