Game 186 – Maple Leafs 9, Canadiens 1

Game 186
Maple Leafs 9, Canadiens 1
Saturday, December 5, 1942
Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Ontario

Apparently inspired by football men who talked of a high scoring Canadian gridiron final, but failed to produce the predicted point orgy, the Toronto Maple Leafs went riding to a 9-1 decision over the Montréal Canadiens at the Gardens Saturday night.

It was an amazing turn of events, for two big reasons. The Leafs were without Sweeney Schriner, the left wing smoothie, who has been poison for the Canadiens ever since Dick Irvin became coach of the Montréals. And they were also minus Syl Apps, the ace centre.

Hap Day trotted out two strange forward lines, added Babe Pratt to the lineup, and gave Montréal “the business” in all languages. Pratt signalled his debut as a Leaf by popping in the opening goal.

Bob Davidson showed up as left wing sub for Schriner, working with Carr and Taylor. Carr picked off a goal and three assists. Taylor duplicated that scoring count. Gaye Stewart, offering another of his fine performances, came up with two goals and an assist.

The Leafs led 2-0 at the end of the first period, and added the only goal of the second. In the third, the homesters beat Paul Bibeault six times. Dutch Hiller saved the Montréalers from a whitewashing with a score when the count stood at 6-0 for the Leafs.

Gord Drillon failed to break the scoring jinx against his ex-mates.
