Trades

Despite their contentious, competitive history, Toronto and Montréal have occasionally used each other to bolster their rosters by way of trades. While some franchises (such as Montréal and Boston) refuse to do business with each other at all, these two have conducted just 29 trades throughout their storied histories.

While the trades are typically for the likes of cash considerations or draft picks, a few major names in the rivalry’s history have been part of these trades – whether it be Lorne Chabot heading to Montréal for star goalie George Hainsworth in 1933 (so that the Canadiens could field a Francophone netminder), Montréal trading young prospect Ted Kennedy in 1943 before he became a Leafs legend, or Toronto shockingly trading top prospect Russ Courtnall in 1988.

Starting in 1952, the NHL held an annual intra-league draft, allowing NHL teams to claim unprotected players from one of the league’s other five franchises. While Montréal and Toronto tended to be better stocked than some of the league’s less successful teams, there were still seven claims made between 1958 and 1972, exchanging players between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. The intra-league draft ended in 1975 and was replaced with the NHL waiver draft (1977-2003), but no claims between Montréal and Toronto were made.
