Game 041 – Canadiens 6, St. Pats 4

Game 041
Canadiens 6, St. Pats 4
Wednesday, February 8, 1922
Aréna Mont-Royal, Montréal, Québec

The Canadiens temporarily saved their chance for second place in the National Hockey League when they circled around the Toronto St. Patricks and carried off the honours at the Mount Royal Arena here tonight by a score of 6 to 4.

About 4,000 people saw an interesting and an exciting game. Toronto appeared to be playing more or less in a state of amazement from whistle to final bell, and if it had not been that Ross Roach stood in the visitors’ net, the score would have been a good deal worse. Roach received most of his support from Cameron, who scored twice and led nearly all the impressive attacks on Vézina. Dye, Noble and Randall were there with the shooting, but not with the requisite speed and dash.

For the Canadiens, Lalonde, Berlinquette and Bouchard were the bright and shining lights. Vézina was back to his first of the season form, and stopped most of the long ones without difficulty. His task, however, was not comparable to that of the wizard Roach.

The Canadiens are taking a new lease of life as the end of the season approaches, or else the St. Pats are on the decided wane. No other explanation suffices for a game in which the Flying Frenchmen had such a distinct advantage at all times. The Green Shirts’ defence was sloppy during all three periods, and offered only nominal resistance to the sharp attack of the re-energized Canadien forwards. Manager Dandurand used his entire team, with the exception of Bert Corbeau. The Flying Frenchmen’s wind and legs were good, and they pressed from start to finish.
