Game 067 – Canadiens 5, St. Pats 4

Game 067
Canadiens 5, St. Pats 4
Tuesday, January 5, 1926
Aréna Mont-Royal, Montréal, Québec

The St. Pats gave another evidence of their return to form by stepping in Montréal last night and holding the Canadiens 5-4 in a fierce, hard game, which was in doubt until the final gong.

The St. Pats’ defeat, combined with Boston’s victory over Pittsburgh last night, shoves the Irish into the cellar position, but the fact that the Querrites put up a real game helps a lot. Jack Adams was the outstanding star of the St. Pats team and, in fact, of the game. He got three of the St. Pats’ four goal,s and was always in the fray. Several times he made the Canadien defence look like a couple of King Tut’s guardians.

It was the Canadiens’ ability to fight back which brought them the victory tonight. Behind 2 to 1 near the end of the second period, the French Canadians got two goals in 25 seconds. The St. Pats tied the tally early in the final session, when the crafty Jack Adams scored his third goal, but again the Canadiens rushed and clinched the game on successive counts by Morenz and Hector Lépine.

Penalties were not particularly frequent, but they were regular enough to keep either one side or the other short. At one time in the first period, the St. Pats were playing four men to six, and they held their goal safe at this stage, but with Corbeau back on from his second penalty and Adams still on the bench, Morenz gave Joliat a perfect pass, and the Canadien flash gave Roach no chance as he drove straight and true for the upper corner of the net. That tied it up.

In the second period, the crowd hurled everything loose at referee O’Hara because he took a goal from Joliat, scored after umpire O’Hara had whistled for a trip by McCaffrey.
