Game 069
Canadiens 6, St. Pats 3
Tuesday, January 26, 1926
Aréna Mont-Royal, Montréal, Québec
The Montréal Canadiens defeated the Toronto St. Patricks by 6 to 3 in a scheduled contest of the National Hockey League here tonight. The game was featured by a scoring bee in the third period, when the Canadiens scored four goals, while the St. Patricks responded with two. The Canadiens registered twice and the St. Patricks once in the first frame, while the second went goalless.
In the first period, Lépine’s shot broke a window in the Arena roof. The Canadiens were distinctly the better team, and would have scored more goals but for the brilliant work of Roach in the visitors’ net.
Morenz, Joliat, Pit Lépine, Boucher and Leduc played fast, aggressive hockey for the winners, who were back at full strength for the game, Coutu being reinstated and Leduc recovered from an injured shoulder.
The game was fast and exciting, although the second period dragged as the teams played carefully, with the Canadiens leading at 2-1.
The break came early in the third period, when Adams and Joliat were benched for attempting to fight. Corbeau was already in the pen, and the St. Pats were reduced to four men against five, Boucher and Morenz pressed the advantage, and twice scored before the team got back to strength, giving the Canadiens an edge which was too much for the Irish to overcome, though they tried gallantly. At least they worked hard, but McCaffrey secured the only effective player in front of the brilliant Roach, and he could not do it all. His two goals in the third period were thrilling tricks.
