Game 074
Canadiens 4, St. Pats 0
Saturday, January 22, 1927
Forum de Montréal, Montréal, Québec
The Canadiens swept through the Toronto St. Patricks with a whirlwind attack in the first period of their NHL sectional tussle at the Forum Saturday night, scored four goals in the opening 13 minutes of play, and called it a night.
The St. Pats, tossed and buffeted by the fury of the storm which swept over them at the start of the journey, steadied down in the last two periods and battled the hurricane, but the Irish could make no headway, and were forced to concede defeat, 4 to 0.
The Canadiens opened up the game to take an early lead. Morenz tallied the first goal on a sizzling drive, but it was the threat of Herb Gardiner on his flank which caused the Toronto defence to go wide and give Morenz his chance. Less than four minutes later, Cooper banged home the puck after a shot by Mantha. From the faceoff, Cooper scored again on a rebound from Hart’s drive.
Art Gagné concluded the scoring for the game when he sent in a vicious drive. Roach was busy shrieking for someone to watch Gardiner on the left side, and Gagné’s drive went between the Toronto goalkeeper’s pads.
The second session produced the big thrills of the game, with both sides battling evenly and the two goals under constant fire, with the Irish having a slight edge. There was a tendency to fireworks in the middle period. Corbeau drew the wrath of players and fans when he floundered on top of Hainsworth in a scramble around the Canadien goal. Hainsworth’s arm was bruised in the melee, but he resumed his position in the net.
Pit Lépine held the spotlight halfway through the period with dazzling play, and then more trouble threatened when Brydge whacked Joliat’s stick out of his hands, and Joliat was ready to fight back. Brydge was benched, and Corbeau spoke his mind to Dr. Eddie O’Leary, the referee chasing Corbeau. The St. Pats finished the period two short, but hung on gamely.
