Game 156 – Maple Leafs 9, Canadiens 4

Game 156
Maple Leafs 9, Canadiens 4
Thursday, January 12, 1939
Forum de Montréal, Montréal, Québec

Led by the brilliant Syl Apps, who scored four goals in the first two periods, the Toronto Maple Leafs broke out in a general scoring rash and ran up the season’s high score of 9 to 4 over the hapless Canadiens tonight.

Unfortunately, Apps was forced to leave the game with a slight injury early in the third period when he had a good chance to tie the modern National Hockey League record of five goals, which is held jointly by the late Howie Morenz, Charlie Conacher, Pit Lépine and Punch Broadbent.

Outskating and outgeneralling the Frenchmen throughout after getting off to a rapid fire start, the Toronto team looked like the Leafs of old tonight.

They rapped in two goals in less than two minutes of play, and soon turned the game into a rout. The Torontonians led by 4-1 at the end of the first period, and by 8-3 after two periods. Besides his four goals, Apps collected an assist for a five point evening.

Drillon scored twice, and Metz, McDonald and Romnes netted one apiece. The Canadiens’ goals were registered by Brown, Trudel, Ward and Cain.

Busher Jackson, who is threatened with an attack of appendicitis, played in only the first period and a small part of the second. Normie Mann of the Syracuse team was the Leafs’ extra forward this evening.

A crowd of about 7,000 saw the Habitants anchored a bit firmer in the cellar as the Toronto squad made life miserable for goalie Cude and his often baffled defence staff.
