Game 014
Canadiens 13, Arenas 4
Saturday, January 11, 1919
Aréna Jubilée, Montréal, Québec
By defeating the Arenas of Toronto on Saturday night, 13 to 4, the Canadiens regained the leadership in the race. The match was uninteresting, the Flying Frenchmen smothering their opponents with speed.
The Arena forwards and defence played far below their standard, and left the greater portion of the work to be done by goalkeeper Lindsay. He was unequal to the whole job. Never at any stage of the game was the Toronto team dangerous, and not until the majority of the regulars were taken out by the Canadiens and subs sent in did the visitors score.
The keen ice service suited the Montréalers, and they cut out a pace that was heartbreaking to their guests, and forced them to crack under the gruelling test. Lalonde was the outstanding player. He scored four goals, and was responsible for several of the others tallied from his combination plays.
Lalonde retired at the conclusion of the second period and witnessed the final twenty minutes of the game from the stand. The Arenas, apparently fatigued by their trip and game at Ottawa, and the journey from Ottawa here, failed to check back as in previous matches, while the defence players seldom figured in a rush up the ice.
The extremely cold weather had a felling effect on the attendance, which was the smallest of the season, only about a thousand making the journey to the east end rink.
