Game 191 – Canadiens 2, Maple Leafs 0

Game 191
Canadiens 2, Maple Leafs 0
Sunday, January 17, 1943
Forum de Montréal, Montréal, Québec

Defenceman Butch Bouchard paced the Montréal Canadiens to a 2-0 shutout over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a rugged National Hockey League match here tonight, scoring both goals for Montréal and assisting dramatically in blocking attempts by the Leafs to reach the Canadiens’ net.

The largest attendance at the Montréal Forum this season – 11,144 – watched the Habitants outskate and outmanoeuvre the Leafs to the shutout victory, the first for goalie Paul Bibeault this season.

Bouchard scored his first counter early in the second period, after the Habitants had piled into the Toronto area with a five man drive. A wild scrimmage developed and Elmer Lach picked up a passed shot by Glen Harmon and passed to Bouchard. Butch took a sharp angle shot from the right that filtered into the goal past a much surprised Turk Broda.

The Leafs fought bitterly to erase this 1-0 lead, but they couldn’t click on their passing plays and failed to reach the Canadiens’ goal more than 20 times during the entire round.

The second period continued without further score, and as the third period started, the Leafs were again held in check, and when Reg Hamilton drew a minor penalty Bouchard netted his second counter.

Elmer Lach brought the puck to the Toronto zone and a scramble developed. Then Lach shot a pass across to Joe Benoit, who drew Broda from his goal. But instead of firing at the goal, he slipped the puck to Bouchard, who completed the scoring.
