The Canadiens made an important advance in the National Hockey League race when they defeated Toronto Saturday evening by 5 to 3. The victory, for the time being at least, reduces the threat of the St. Pats to take second place in the standing, the local club having a margin of three points over the Irishmen and being one point behind Ottawa, who defeated Hamilton Saturday night.

The Canadiens are still one point behind Ottawa in the race for the National Hockey League honours, the Habitants keeping pace with the league leaders at the expense of the Toronto St. Patricks, whom they defeated here last night by 3 to 1. The speedy Canadien forwards outclassed their opponents practically throughout the game, and their more aggressive play earned the decision.

The St. Patricks were said to be “leg weary” and “train weary” after their long tour to the coast, but the 7 to 2 victory which they scored over the Canadiens here in the opening game of the National Hockey League Saturday night gives little indication that their trip put the Irish off their stride. The clan of O’Donaghue stepped into the Montréalers with a will, and after holding them to a one goal lead for two periods, broke away in the final session and ran in four goals.
