Game 019 – Canadiens 8, Arenas 2

Game 019
Canadiens 8, Arenas 2
Saturday, February 15, 1919
Aréna Jubilée, Montréal, Québec

The Canadiens played with the Arenas Saturday as a cat with a mouse, and the score at the end of the hour’s time was 8 to 2 in favour of the locals. Whatever chance the Arenas had of tying with Ottawa for the second half of the race was killed by the loss.

Both teams started with the regular lineups, and for a short time in the first period, the Arenas put up an argument, but when the Canadiens scored the first goal, through the efforts of Pitre, the Arenas faded. The forward line, composed of Skinner, Noble and Crawford did well, but the defence was practically useless.

Randall played a fair game and showed flashes of speed, but he was weak on the defensive. Lindsay, in goal, had an off night. Two shots went through his legs in such easy fashion that the crowd hooted him. Even his own teammates laughed at him when he allowed a shot to get past from a faceoff near his net. On the other hand, Vézina gave a clever exhibition, and this perhaps accounted for the Arenas’ forwards becoming discouraged.

Noble showed a flash of speed at times, but seemed to be out of condition and faded away. He missed several chances in the second period. The Arena forward line had to play as the defence most of the time, Mummery and Randall often leaving their posts on a rush and loafing offside on the way back. There was little or no combination attempted by the Arenas, and they were never in the running.

The Canadiens had little trouble in accumulating their score of eight goals, and used combination play with good effect. So easy was the Canadiens’ victory that Lalonde retired at the close of the second period. He watched the third session from the bench.
